Sheffield City Open meet

Saturday 28th August saw 13 Mighty Mansfield swimmers converge on Ponds forge in Sheffield to take on some high quality swimmers in the Sheffield city s c open meet. It was an early season dip to see where our swimmers stood at the beginning of the season and they did not disappoint, 34 of the swims were swum faster than the published entry times, with 6 first places, 3 second places and 5 third places. It was a great start to the season and many pb's swum, it offered a chance to swim at a great venue and we would encourage others to consider giving it a go next year. Well done to all who took part and especially some of our younger swimmers entering Ponds Forge for the first time, after witnessing the performance of all the kids they will certainly be returning there to swim in the future.

Notts ASA summer gala

Sunday the 18th July saw us take 20 swimmers to Beechdale for the Notts ASA Summer Gala, once again a good day with 29 new pbs swam. The day showed that the swimmers attitude and desire to be the best is a credit to each and every one of them. The finale of the day saw the fastest 200 i/m swimmers taking part in the skins event, in the girls event Kerris Palmer made the final and performed very well after a tiring day. The boys event saw Mansfield swimmers take up 4 of the 6 final places, Ben Canavan Taylor, Oliver Hempsall, Ethan Tindall and Shaquille Hamilton who eventually was the winner after beating Ollie in the last swim. Once again well done to all the swimmers you were a credit to the club.

Mary Davis Trophy Gala

Our annual Mary Davies trophy gala was held at water meadows on sat 10 July.
As always it was very competitive with teams from Kimberley, Leander, Bramcote, Eckington, Sutton and ourselves taking part. Once again the team did well with 15 individual pb's recorded and 14 relay pb's. First places on the night went to Shannon Scott, Emma Beeson, Ryan Radford and Leah Clegg, there were 5 other events where we gained 2nd places.
The event was won by Bramcote well done to them and we will make sure that next year we win the trophy back.

Nova County Squad
Eight of our talented youngsters were able to trial for the county squad in June and each of them performed fantastically well on the day, doing both themselves, the club and their parents very proud.  Due to a limited number of spaces available not all were accepted but congratulations go to Ben Sharrocks, Ryan Radford, Alice Tuska, Charlotte Baguley and Libby Coleman who start nova in August, good luck and well done to you all..

Derby and Notts league
After a few years in the wilderness we entered the Derby and Notts League which is a league to give our younger swimmers a chance to shine, shine they certainly did. After the first two rounds we found ourselves pitched in against very strong opposition in the final.  In that final the team acquitted themselves very well and swam a total of 27 pbs, 12 of which were individual and the other 15 were in the relays.  Well done to all the swimmers and keep up the hard work.

Development League
Again an opportunity for our young stars to show the rest of Notts what a talented bunch they are. This league is swum in 2 rounds and with 15 teams, all the results are put together and the winners are determined by a virtual gala.
Once again our young hopefuls excelled themselves by finishing 2nd behind Kimberley and 74 pbs being posted in total.  The future does indeed look very bright and a big well done to all who swam.

Chris Dale Success

Chris Dale who belongs to both Mansfield Swimming and Mansfield Triathlon clubs won the European Triathlon age group championships with a fantastic time in Athlone, Ireland last weekend.
http://www.triathlon.org/results/results/2010_athlone_etu_triathlon_european_championships/4888/
He raced in miserable rainy conditions, with 70mph gusts of wind....... I suspect he's now got his eye on World Champs!  The standard distance race was 1.5km open water swim, 40km cycle, finishing with a 10 km run.

Well done Chris.

Many congratulations to the following swimmers who have been named PB Trophy Winners 2009

Junior Boys - Brendan O Keefe
Senior Boys - Jordan Chadburn

Junior Girls - Kerris Palmer
Senior Girls - Amelia Taylor

The achievements of these individuals in 2009 have all been outstanding in their own rights and they are worthy winners of the PB trophies.

The Don Osborne President’s Shield 2009

On Monday 1st Feb I had the very pleasurable job of presenting The Don Osborne President’s Shield to Paige Tindall.

Paige was in her early years a formidable competitor and indeed was overall runner up in the competitive County ASA 10 yrs BAGCATS. Even in the last couple of years when injuries have frustrated her progress as a swimmer she has always turned out to help the club teams and without her contribution the club teams would not have been as successful.

In addition to competing  Paige has also taken the time to assist on poolside teaching young swimmers. The experiences of being a competitive swimmer undoubtedly helped Paige in her demonstrations to her eager pupils.

People who take the time to put back into the sport some of what they have taken out are a heart warming thing to see and it came as no surprise to me when I consulted some of the people involved with the club over the past year that this individual was the most popular choice.

I hope when you see Paige over the next few days you will take the opportunity to congratulate her.

The citation presented to Paige is set out below.

Midland Short Course 7th & 8th November 2009

Corby International Pool

Mansfield Swimming Club is proud to announce one of the largest groups of swimmers ever to represent the club at the Midland Short Course.

Many of the swimmers will compete under Nova Centurion while a few will appear under the name of Mansfield Swimming Club.

It is wonderful to have so many swimmers this year and this shows both the progress the club has made and the desire of swimmers to continue to compete at a high level.

I also find it very encouraging for the future success of the club to see the depth of talent across both boys and girls and the versatility of the swimmers in number of event in which they have gained qualification.

I am sure you will wish all the swimmers list below well and will follow their progress over the course of the weekend by visiting the East Midlands website at http://www.asaem.org.uk/

Christmas Party

This is now going to be held on Friday 4th December 2009

Further details will be published in due course

IMPORTANT NOTICE

FROM THE COACHING TEAM

Since our return from the summer recess, the numbers of swimmers attending the later sessions have become unmanageable and these numbers are unsustainable if progress and safety are to be maintained.

For swimmers to progress they need a structured programme delivered to match their ability and subsequently develop their skills.  They also need space to allow them the opportunity to train and practice these skills to make them more competent swimmers.

To allow this to happen we are going to update the club structure and set criteria for specific squads.  These squads will then have pool time allocated to them.  Once this exercise is completed, quarterly updates will be programmed into the sessions to provide swimmers with further opportunities to advance.

We do apologise if this action causes any inconvenience, however we do hope you see that this stance has had to be taken in the best interests of the swimmers, parents, coaches and the club as a whole.  By completing this exercise everyone will have a better understanding of the requirements to move squads.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Summer Get-together

A number of us from the club are going to Sherwood Pines on Sunday 23rd August from Midday, obviously subject to the weather.  So if anyone is interested in joining us, then bring some sun cream, bring own picnics, and lets all play some games, chill, chat and generally have a good afternoon together.

Cheers Barry

Another Mansfield Champion!

Chris Dale our Junior Club Captain has won the Individual Sprint Distance race at the Mazda London Triathlon that was held on Saturday 1st August.
He came 1st out of 1500 competitors in the individual sprint distance that comprises of a 750m swim in The Thames, 20k cycle and a 5km run. His times were for the swim 11.23, bike 32.16 and run 16.17 total 1:04:30 He would have been one of the youngest competitors and came across the finishing line wearing the Mansfield Triathlon Club colours.

Who needs Rebecca Adlington when we have Chris Dale!

STROKE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Part of the role as coach is to evaluate the season and look at areas for improvement.  On the whole I believe the club has moved forward, and this has been backed up with performances in the water.  I do not however wish us to become complacent.  Over the course of recent events I have observed a need to re-establish a focus on stroke development and starts and turns.  With this in mind, and because technique is the cornerstone of swimming, I am going to introduce specific training within these areas in the Sunday sessions.  This will commence immediately following the Summer break and will affect lanes 2 - 5.  Lane 1 will continue their own development programme and will be used to introduce younger swimmers to the extended session length.  Lane 6 will utilise specificity to cater for the individual needs of this group of swimmers.

Midlands 2009

Good luck to the swimmers taking part in the age group Midland Championships this weekend and next.  Go with a strategy in mind, enjoy the experience and swim fast

Best Wishes

Barry

New Coaches

Big congratulations to MSC's newest coaches who all passed their level 1 UKCC coaches qualification

Caroline Radford
Gary Scott
Dave O'Keefe
Mark Gee
Michael Godson

Gaining qualifications adds validity and assists in developing coaches, and the club can be proud in the achievements and dedication of these individuals who give their time voluntarily to take the club forward.

National Qualifier!

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that Kerris Palmer has joined our elite group of National Qualifiers.  Kerris achieved this feat at Sheffield this weekend in the 200m Backstroke with a time of 2:35.13.  We are extremely proud of this achievement and I am convinced that this is just the start for Kerris and that more qualifying times will follow.

Barry

And in with the new .....

Today, I have officially taken taken over the Mansfield swimming club website and I wanted to take this opportunity to say 'Hi!'.  For those of you who don't know me; my name is Sarah Armsby (the woman with the 2 broken legs and far too much time to spare!).  I am a fairly recent addition to the club and am really pleased to be given the opportunity to help out by running the website.

The other important reason for this is to say a massive 'Thank you' to Julie who has spent the last 7 years building this site from scratch.  From the inside and out let me assure you this has taken an astronomical amount of time and effort !  I know Julie is looking forward to moving on to pastures new (or at least a green!) and will be missed by friends old and new.

last but not least ...

Although initially things will stay the same while I get my head around everything; I will be looking to make changes in the coming weeks and months and would like members to give me their ideas - please use the 'email' post box on the homepage to send your comments and ideas and I will do my best to include as much as is feasible.

I look forward to hearing from you xx

Counties 2009

What a fantastic last couple of months!

Over 50 swimmers with qualification times entered the Counties this year and Mansfield enjoyed some tremendous successes both individually and in the final gala relays. Listed below are swimmers and teams who achieved a top three position in their age group or top ten Bagcat positions. However this only tells part of the story of the 2009 counties. The massive number of individual pbs and the general enthusiasm shown by swimmers and supporters showed everyone what success looks like….its blue and gold….and it’s MANSFIELD.

I make no apologises for the length of this list as all swimmers deserve a mention

Other Mansfield Qualifiers who although not featured above achieved many PBS and they also did the club proud by showing the strength in depth that underpins our club.

But what now?

Perhaps a little time to reflect on our success before the next targets? No way!

Over the coming months Mansfield will be well represented in the Midland Youth & BAGCAT Age Group Championships and swimmers are already preparing for this round of competition. The club is also actively encouraging other swimmers to go out to open meets as part of their continual development.

More news on the Midlands will follow later in the year.

Speedo Round 3 Finals

Mansfield have another good night at MacDonald's (courtesy of Mr Jones our Treasurer).

Sorry that should have been
MANSFIELD SWIM VERY WELL AND ARE PROMOTED TO DIV 1 AGAIN

We had a long 2 hour journey all the way to Droitwich for the final round of this years National Swimming League, the hard work in rounds 1 & 2 had been worth it as we collected maximum league points, however on paper it was looking to be a very close final with only 2 points separating 1st place and 5th place in the league table. The teams in the final were, (in lane order)

1    Wyre Forest       25 pts
2    Phoenix Youth    27 pts
3    Ledbury              27 pts
4    Mansfield            27 pts
5    Stratford            25 pts
6    Droitwich            23 pts

with 12 points on offer for 1st place down to 2 points for 6th any permutation was possible!

Knowing that we would be without 3 of our first choice swimmers for the final it was going to be a difficult task in putting together a team capable of (a) making sure we got promotion and (b) win the gala. Then at 1.30 on Saturday another swimmer rang in ill. But as all team managers know that's all part of the territory. What a good job we had 2 hours on the coach to speak to the kids and fill in the gaps on the team sheets.

On arrival at Droitwich we found it difficult to park our coach as the top car park was full of cars and the bottom car park was flooded with the over night rain. Some of the kids would have preferred swimming in the car park as it looked better than the pool!!!!  This was certainly not the best venue to hold a Division 2 final. No electronic timing! Very little space for the swimmers and their belongings!  Minimal spectator facilitators and the pool was very warm indeed. During the warm up we had a swimmer with a bleeding nose which the first-aiders could not stop, this prevented him from swimming in the first round of relays and lead to more changes on the team sheet!!!!!!!!!

So it was on to the swimming, Kim Colton got us off to a good start by winning the first event and we had a good round of relays, after 12 events we were in a 3 way tie with 48 points each, at the end of event 24 we were trailing by 3 points to Ledbury but had got a 10 point lead on the next two clubs, Stratford and Wyre Forest.

Despite some spirited swimming we were losing ground on Ledbury, by event 36 we were training by 15 points but we were still managing to pull away from our nearest 2 competitors, extending our lead to 13 points.

As event 42 finished we only had the final 8 relays to go and we were still 14 points behind Ledbury but now only 8 points in front of Stratford.  We then put together an excellent run of results in the last 6 relays winning 4 and finishing a 2nd and a 3rd, there was then an anxious wait to see if we had secured enough points to seal promotion.

As usual the announcers do it in reverse order, Droitwich 110, Phoenix Youth 172, Stratford 177, Wyre Forest 179, Mansfield 199, Ledbury 209. That gave us 10 league points and with it Promotion, Second on the Night and Second in the league. Not a bad result at all out of 24 clubs.

On the night our 13 year olds hauled in 61 points out of a maximum possible of 72, which was very impressive. Special thanks go to Katie Banks and Phillipa Staff for their help in filling in vacant swims and despite both being 13 year olds they filled in at 15 years and Open. Also Amelia Taylor who won 2 individual events and was part of 3 winning relay teams. We also had 21 PBs and 13 first places, Oliver Hempsall had 3 PBs, Kerris Palmer had 2 and Jamie Dinning broke his 50m Free PB 3 times on the night, this just shows how every one contributed to a good team performance.

So it was off to celebrate at our favourite MacDonald's.  You all deserved every mouthful (webmaster Julie)

A Big thank you to all those that have helped with official duties throughout this campaign and to all those swimmers that have taken part in the 3 galas at Derby, Bromsgrove and finally Droitwich. Many parents have also travelled long distances in support of the team either on the bus or by car, so a big thank you to them also. Please keep supporting in 2009.

Grahame Hempsall
